The offers two concentrations, Writing Arts or Literary Arts, as well as two minors, English or .  The goal of the English program is to help students develop the reading, writing, speaking, research, and critical thinking skills necessary for their professional, civic, and personal success.  English also offers courses in the  and the ³¾²¹Âá´Ç°ù.ÌýFor more information on the English major and programs, contact Dr. Katherine Durham Oldmixon, Chair of the English Department.

The English Department and the co-sponsor the .  Students in the English program publish the HT literary magazine, 900 Chicon, and have the opportunity to join Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society.

The English  program is a fundamental component of the University’s core curriculum. All students take two semesters of first-year composition and rhetoric (ENGL 1301 Intro to Composition, which works with hip-hop pedagogy and ENGL 1302 College Rhetoric and Composition, which focuses on writing about food and culture) and one semester of sophomore literature (Intro to African and African American Literature; Literature through Film; American Literature; Intro to Latin@ Literature; or World Literature.)

English  also offers courses that meet the core curriculum writing intensive and diversity course requirements.  Recent upper-division literature offerings have included the Literature of the American Worker;  Monsters and Mirrors; Revolutionary Literature; Poetry from the British Isles to the Caribbean Islands, and World Literature and the Environment.  Recent upper-division writing courses have included Writing Speculative Fiction, Poetry: Form and Idea; Memoir; Writing Magical Realism; Technical Writing; Advanced Rhetoric and Argumentation; and Teaching Writing.
